A Queen Once Started a War Over a Bull
Queen Medb and her husband are lying in bed, content and entwined after a night of passionate intimacy. It is at this moment her husband Ailill decides to tell Medb how much better her life is now that she's married to him, and how lucky she is to have him.
This did not go over well.
See, Medb was already the daughter of the High King of Ireland. She had her own wealth, her own power, her own kingdom. So when her husband acts like he's her savior, she gets competitive.
They decide to settle this by comparing their individual wealth. Right there in bed, they call servants to parade all their possessions through the bedroom - cattle, gold, land, everything. After hours of counting, they're dead even on everything.
Except he has one better bull. Her bull. The white bull Finnbhennach was born into Medb's herds, but decided a woman wasn't worthy of owning him, so he switched himself over to her husband's side.
So Medb invaded her ex-husband's kingdom, started a war that lasted years, and got thousands killed. All because her husband couldn't keep his mouth shut and her bull had some issues.
That's the kind of story that should be everywhere. But instead, it's buried in some academic translation that most people will never read.
And there are thousands more just like it.
These Stories Deserve Better
Look, I love these stories. Egyptian pharaohs playing deadly games of succession. Celtic warriors losing their minds over livestock disputes. Norse warriors whose family feuds span generations and destroy entire kingdoms. Knights whose perfect ideals crumble the second they meet reality.
But nobody's telling them right. They're buried in academic papers that drain all the life out of them. Turned into kids' cartoons. Scattered across random Wikipedia pages. Incredible tales of royal courts and legendary figures get reduced to footnotes.
That's treason.
That's why I created Quest for Power. We take these legendary tales and build them into one epic fantasy world - but instead of made-up kingdoms, we're using the actual myths and legends that shaped our history. Our unreliable narrator doesn't just retell these stories, he brings them to life with the kind of masterful storytelling that makes you forget you're not reading fiction.
